Paul Smedley & Huntington Tracks at Vroman’s Bookstore
Join us to hear author Paul Smedley discuss and read from his book, Huntington Trades.
This book tells the story of how Collis and Henry Huntington built their railroading empire into Southern California between the 1870s and the Great Merger of 1911. It is a capitalist’s history, and includes the railroad companies and individuals who tried to stop the Huntington’s progress to forward their own plans and schemes. The birth of the Pacific Electric Railway grew into the most successful electric railway in the world; with 1.100 miles of track in four counties: Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, and San Bernardino. The book is enhanced with photos, news clippings, and maps to tell the story the best way possible.

Susannah Rodriguez Dissi & The Latin Poet’s Guide to the Cosmos at Book Soup
Join us to hear and meet author Susannah Rodriguez Dissi, who will read and discuss her book The Latin Poet’s Guide to the Cosmos.
This trilingual poetry book is written in Romance language, Spanish, and Italian. A delightfully choreographed and ultimately scintillating hoodwink, this collection is a cross-linguistic poetic event in which the correspondence between Romance languages is as close as to approach the condition of a new vernacular. It ultimately proposes that the Latinity is always first and foremost expressed through the language. And, sometimes, also humor.

Karen Olsson &The Weil Conjectures at Chevalier’s Bookstore
Please join us to welcome author Karen Olsson, in conversation with Emily Bell, as she discusses her book, The Weil Conjectures, an eloquent blend of memoir and biography exploring the Weil siblings, math, and creative inspiration.
In the author’s stirring and unusual third book, she tells the story of the brilliant Weil siblings—Simone, a philosopher, mystic, and social activist, and Andre, an influential mathematician—while also recalling the years Olsson spent studying math. As she delves into these lives, she grapples with their intellectual obsessions and rekindles one of her own. For the author, it is the odd detours that lead to discovery, to moments of insight. Thus, this book is an elegant blend of biography and memoir and meditation on the creative life.
Personal, revealing, and approachable, this book eloquently explores math as it relates to intellectual history, and shows how sometimes the most inexplicable pursuits turn out to be the most rewarding.

Among the post-9/11 rubble, her younger brother and soulmate Nate arrives in holiday-season Manhattan in search of his sister. By piecing together a makeshift diary he recovers from the Grand Central locker where Peddie had secreted it, Nate unfolds the story of the previous 1999 New Year’s Eve events and his sister’s subsequent fall from fame into a heroin habit, and eventual salvation. Lisa Lutz & The Swallows at Vroman’s Bookstore
Join us to hear Lisa Lutz, author of ten novels including the Spellman series, present her latest book, The Swallows: A Novel.
In her latest book, a new teacher at a New England rep school ignites a gender war—with deadly consequences. It starts with a simple writing prompt from new creative writing teacher Alex Witt, who soon learns about The Ten—the students at the top of the school’s social hierarchy—as well as their connection to something called The Darkroom. The few girls who question the “boys will be boys” attitude incite a resistance that quickly becomes a movement and gains momentum. This timely tale shows what can happen when silence wins out over decency for too long, and why the scariest threat of all might be that sooner or later, girls will be girls.

Jia Tolentino & Trick Mirror at Skylight Bookstore
Join us to hear New Yorker writer and author Jia Tolentino discuss her debut book of essays, Trick Mirror.
Jia Tolentino is a peerless voice of her generation, tackling the conflicts, contradictions, and sea changes that define us and our time. In this dazzling collection of nine essays, she delves into the forces that warp our vision, demonstrating an unparalleled stylistic potency and critical dexterity. This book tackles the river of self-delusion that surges beneath the surface of our lives, in a culture that revolves around the self.
In each essay she writes about a cultural prism: the rise of the nightmare social internet; the advent of scamming as the definitive millennial ethos; the literary heroine’s journey from brave to blank to bitter; and the punitive dream of optimization, which insists that everything, including our bodies, should become more efficient and beautiful until we die.

Rachel Louise Snyder & No Visible Bruises at Book Soup
Join us to hear author Rachel Louise Snyder discuss and sign her book, No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us.
Whatever we call it, we generally do not believe that domestic violence has anything at all to do with us, despite the World Health Organization deeming it a “global epidemic.” In America, domestic violence accounts for 15 percent of all violent crimes and yet it remains locked in silence, even as its tendrils reach unseen into so many of our most pressing national issues, from our economy to our education system, from mass shootings to mass incarceration to #MeToo. We still have not taken the true measure of this problem.

Tupelo Hassman & gods with a little G at Skylight Bookstore
Please join us to hear author Tupelo Hassman, in conversation with author Jim Krusoe, discuss her book, gods with a little G: A Novel.
This is a powerful, vibrant story about a teen trapped in a politically bright red and extremely religious town, Rosary, California, with a widower father who is a true believer. When she tries to escape her father’s new and burgeoning romance and her own confused feelings, she begins her first true friendship and starts to see a future outside the tea leaves her aunt reads. This book is about how being a teenager is an apocalypse all its own: there must be destruction for there to be hope.
