This is a turbulent, against-all-odds memoir of self-discovery, success, failure, and reinvention, told by one of LA’s most interesting natives. He recalls his quest to find his place in the arts –and the world. He had many subversive role models, struggled with addiction, and takes readers on a roller coaster ride through the nascent days of Silver Lake’s music and arts community, as seen through the lens of his band, Possum Dixon, and the early talents of artist such as Nirvana and Beck. This is a look back at pre-internet days in the ‘80s and the underground music world of the ‘90s, as seen through the alleys and doorways of an insider.

Tony Maietta & Jerry Torre & The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens at Book Soup
Join us to hear and meet Tony Maietta & Jerry Torre, who will read and discuss their book, The Marble Faun of Grey Gardens: A Memoir of the Beatles, the Maysles Brothers, and Jacqueline Kennedy.
This book is the touching and at times haunting memoir from Jerry Torre about his teenage days as caretaker of Grey Gardens, the now-celebrated mansion chronicled in the documentary and two feature length films. Co-written with historian Tony Maietta, it is a behind-the-scenes look at “Big Edie” and “little Edie” and their bizarre and reclusive life of squalor amidst the tremendous wealth of East Hampton, and the family bond they developed with Jerry.

David Marlett & American Red at Skylight Bookstore
Join us to hear author David Marlet present and launch his new novel, American Red, which follows his debut novel, Fortunate Son.
As the great American Century begins, and the modern world roars to life, Capitalists flaunt their greed and seize power. Socialists and labor unions flex their violent will, and an extraordinary true story of love and sacrifice unfolds. In his debut novel, Fortunate Son, the author introduced readers to a fresh historical fiction—the historical legal thriller—bringing alive people and events leading to and surrounding some of the most momentous trials in history. At the dawn of the 20th century the Idaho governor is assassinated and “Big Bill” Haywood, boss of the American Federation of Miners, is blamed. Close by, his family life is in a shambles. New technologies accelerate American life, but justice lags behind and corruption is rampant. Two idealists risk all, for justice, honor, and for love.
