Michael Horovitz & Friends at Beyond Baroque
British jazz troubadour Michael Horovitz, fellow wordsmith, musician and artist, Vanessa Vie, and Adam Horovitz, bard of Britain’s farmlands, will present their poetry, songs, and music. In 1959 Horovitz founded the periodical New Departures, publishing William S. Burroughs, Samuel Beckett, and Stevie Smith. He continued to edit New Departures for 50 years, coordinating many “live” events and festivals along the way.

Claudia Hernandez & Knitting the Fog at Skylight Bookstore
Please join us to hear Claudia Hernandez, in discussion with Josie Mendez Negrete, discuss her debut memoir, Knitting the Fog, which won the Feminist press’s second annual Louise Meriwether First Book Prize—an award dedicated to publishing a debut work by a woman or non-binary author of color. The author is a poet, editor, translator, and bilingual educator based in Los Angeles.
Weaving together narrative essay and bilingual poetry, this book is the complex self-portrait of a young Chapina girl who wakes up to find her mother gone. When her mother returns three years later, they begin a month-long journey to El Norte.
Once settled in California, Claudia has trouble assimilating. But when back in Guatemala, she is startled to find she no longer belongs there either. This is told in unforgettable vignettes, and is a vivid portrait of immigration, both specific and timely.

Brian Knappenberger & Joseph Menn in Conversation at the Hammer Museum

Eloise Klein Healy is the author of eight books of poetry, including A Wild Surmise. She was appointed first Los Angeles City Poet laureate in 2012, and awarded the Publishing Triangle Lifetime Achievement Award in 2015. Her imprint with RHP, Arktoi Books, specializes in publishing high quality literary work by lesbian authors.
Ron Koertge is a prolific writer, and his first book, The Father Poems, was published in 1973, which was followed by poetry, prose, novels-in-verse, and fiction for teens. His most recent book, Vampire Planet (2016) was released by RHP, and he taught for 37 years at Pasadena City College. He now teaches in the Hamline University low-residency MFA program.
Kim Dower is former Poet Laureate of West Hollywood and has published four collections of poetry, all with RHP, the most recent being Sunbathing on Tyrone Power’s Grave. She is founder of Kim-from-L.A., a literary marketing and publicity company that helps writers get their words out into the world.
Francesca Bell has been widely published and is former poetry editor of River Styx. She is the translator of a collection of poems by Palestinian poet Shatha Abu Hnaish (Dar Fadaat, 2017), and the author of the collection Bright Stain (Red Hen Press, 2019).

Join us for a six-week writing workshop course led by Laurie Viera Rigler on Storytelling Techniques.
Writing a compelling story is about revealing the world of your protagonist in a way that keeps the reader engaged and eager to know what happens next. In this class we will explore how to “show, don’t tell” and breathe life into a page. There will be writing exercises as well as the opportunity to have the instructor read and comment on your work.

Amanda Gorman: Youth Poet Laureate Reading at MOCA
Amanda Gorman was named the first Youth Poet laureate of the United States in 2017. A native Angeleno, Gorman previously served as Youth Poet Laureate of Los Angeles. She has performed at the Library of Congress and spoken at the United Nations. Her poems are a call to consciousness. She is the founder and executive director of One Pen One Page, an organization providing free creative writing programs for underserved youth.
This young artist brings her powerful words and exuberance to MOCA for an evening of poetry. This event is FREE, but priority tickets are available to MOCA members on the day of the program, and 30 minutes before the program begins tickets will be released to non-members.

Megan Dorame is a Tongva womxn, Indigenous to the Los Angeles basin. She is active in the revitalization of the Tongva language. her poetry has appeared in The Ear and Dryland L.A.
Harry Gamoboa Jr. co-founded ASCO, a conceptual performance art group in East Los Angeles, where he collaborated with Gronk, Patssi Valdez, and Willie Heron. More recently he founded Virtual Verite, an ensemble performance group. His books include Aztlangst: La La Fotonovela (2011) and Rider (2009). He is a faculty member at California Institute of the arts and lectures at CSUN.
Daniel Morales Leon is a poet and writer, and former administrator at United Farm Workers and former union organizer.
Jenise Miller is the daughter of Panamanian immigrants and great-granddaughter of workers who built the Panama Canal. She is inspired to write poetry about growing up in Watts and Compton, and has participated in the South Central L.A.-based DSTL Arts community writing workshops.
Natalie Smith Parra is a native of Los Angeles, where she is at work on a book of creative nonfiction. She has been awarded numerous residencies and grants. and until she was disabled from cancer, taught English and Spanish in Los Angeles high schools.

Pam Ward is a poet and writer and graphic designer very active in Los Angeles since the 1980s. She grew up in the Crenshaw District, and is equally adept at poetry and fiction, and is a stalwart of the Word Stage in Leimert Park. She is the author of two novels, and has published several books with her imprint, Short Dress Press.
Iris De Anda is a writer, activist, and practitioner of the healing arts. A womyn of color of Mexican and Salvadoran descent, she is a leader at the Eastside Café, and author of CODESWITCH: Fires From Mi Corazon.
Sean Hill is the author of Dangerous Goods, awarded the Minnesota Book award in Poetry (2014), and Blood Ties and Brown Liquor, named one of the Ten Books All Georgians Should Read in 2015 by the Georgia Center for the Book (2008). He is a consulting editor at Broadsided Press, and served as the director of the Minnesota Northwoods Writers Conference at Bemidji State University since 2012.
Kat Magill is one of the most powerful and distinct voices in poetry. She found community at an Open Mic in Pomona at age 17, and has captivated audiences around the country since then. She took the poetry slam world by storm, produced two stage plays prior to publishing her first book, Lay my bones under spilled milk. She founded Say Word, a non-profit focused on youth development through spoken word, in 2012, and authored its curriculum, which has been taught to hundreds.

He was released by former Governor Jerry Brown in 2018, and is currently facilitator of Narrative Therapy Based Reentry Healing and Collaboration Circles.
George Sanchez is an Angeleno from the Pico-Union District, and author of two books of poetry, Aztec Slave and Words from the Deep Core of My Brown Corazon, both published during incarceration. His new book of poetry is titled Bumping Slow Oldies with Sad Eyes.
Johana Diaz is a poet who spent most of her teenage life in and out of the juvenile (in)justice system, and was released for the last time in 2017. Her book of poetry, Break Free (2018), depicted her life experience before, during, and after her incarceration. She now focuses on trying to impact other teens with her story in a positive way.
