Book to Action Children’s Event: Author K-Fai Steele at Studio City Branch Library, LAPL – Kids Event
Join us to hear author K-Fai Steele present her children’s book, A Normal Pig, which teaches multicultural appreciation. The author will then help children make cards and small pillows to give to unaccompanied minors through the International Rescue Committee.
This program is intended for children of all ages and their caregivers.
About Book to Action: This program builds on the traditional book club concept by creating a series of dynamic events tailored specifically to connect with adults and multigenerational groups In addition to an opportunity to read and discuss a book, it enables readers to put their knowledge into action by engaging in a community service project related to the book’s topic. Anansi Writers Workshop & Open Mic at the World Stage
The Anansi Writers Workshop was founded in 1990 by Kamau Daáood, Akilah Oliver, Nafis Nabawi and Anthony Lyons. Vroman’s Ed – Storytelling Techniques with Laurie Viera Rigler at Vroman’s Bookstore
Join us for a six-week writing workshop course led by Laurie Viera Rigler on Storytelling Techniques.
Writing a compelling story is about revealing the world of your protagonist in a way that keeps the reader engaged and eager to know what happens next. In this class we will explore how to “show, don’t tell” and breathe life into a page. There will be writing exercises as well as the opportunity to have the instructor read and comment on your work.

Activating Artists: From Trauma to Transformation with Luis Rodriguez at Tía Chucha’s Centro Cultural

Luis J. Rodriguez, author of Always Running, and Tia Chucha’s co-founder, will discuss his work in the community and lead a dialogue with community members. Howard Rodman & The Great Eastern at Book Soup

Kathryn Scanlan & Aug 9 — Fog at Skylight Bookstore
Join us as we welcome debut author Kathryn Scanlan, who will present and sign her debut book, Aug 9–Fog.
This book is a stark, elegiac account of unexpected pleasures and the progress of seasons. Fifteen years ago, when the author found a stranger’s five-year diary in an state auction in a small town in Illinois, she learned the owner was 86 years old when she began recording details of her life in it. It was a small, worn, partly illegible book, but magnetic to Scanlan, who began cutting, editing and rearranging it into the composition that became Aug 9 – Fog, after fifteen years of reviewing it. She chose the title from a note tucked in the diary, and the author’s collaging is an utterly compelling, deeply moving meditation on life and death.
