Anansi Writers Workshop & Open Mic at the World Stage
The Anansi Writers Workshop was founded in 1990 by Kamau Daáood, Akilah Oliver, Nafis Nabawi and Anthony Lyons. In 1993, Michael Datcher initiated the development of a three-part format for the workshop. Their tradition of a community workshop began in the late 1960s at the Watts Writers’ Workshop, where World Stage co-founder Kamau Daáood started his writing career. The Anansi Writers Workshop is coordinated by V. Kali and Conney Williams.
The reading will be by Lynn Thompson, winner of the 2018 Marsh Hawk Poetry Prize, selected by Jane Hirshfield, who will read from her winning collection, Fretwork.

Meliza Banales is an award-winning writer, performer, and slam poet, and was the first Latina on the West Coast to win a poetry slam championship in 2002. She has nonfiction articles on poetry and politics in various encyclopedias, and her film, Do the Math, with Mary Guzman was a prize-winner in 2007.

Moonday Poetry Series & Suzanne Lummis at Flintridge Bookstore
Please join us for a special appearance by acclaimed local poet and author Suzanne Lummis, as part of our Moonday Poetry Series.
Suzanne Lummis is the 2018/19 COLA (City of Los Angeles) award winner and fellow. The honor comes with an endowment to create a new body of work, which she will debut at an event in Grand Performances downtown in June. She is an acclaimed author and poet, taught for over 25 years for UCLA Extension Writers Program, is a founding member of the Nearly Fatal Women performance troupe, and series editor for The Pacific Coast Poetry Series/Beyond Baroque Books. Her works and anthologies are widely published, and her piece “We Have Got to Get Out of LA” appears in the current New Ohio Review. However, she’s not goin’anywhere.
