Join us for Readings and Reflections: An Evening with Joyce Carol Oates, when the award-winning writer, essayist, poet, and novelist will read from her works, including Hazards of Time Travel (2018), and share personal reflections.
Joyce Carol Oates is a writer of more than 40 novels, a number of plays and novellas, and many volumes of short stories, poetry and nonfiction. She won the National Book Award for her novel them (1969), and two novels and two short story collections were each finalists for the Pulitzer Prize. She has taught at Princeton University since 1978 and is currently Professor Emerita in the Program in Creative Writing.

Why I Write for Children Author Event at Central Library, LAPL
Please join us to hear authors in conversation about their motivations and challenges in writing books for children. This event is for adults and is sponsored by FOCAL (Friends of Children and Literature), and is intended for an adult audience, interested in the writing process. Speakers include:
Caroline Arnold is the author of more than 160 books for children, an illustrator, and creator of two blogs.
Hope Anita Smith is the author of The Way a Door Closes, and its sequel, Keeping the Night Watch. A professional storyteller, she teaches poetry-writing workshops to all grade levels.
Michelle Markel is the author of picture books that introduce children to art and literature. Her latest book, forthcoming, is When You Grow Up to Vote, written in the voice of Eleanor Roosevelt.

Authors & The Cochrane Brothers at Diesel Bookstore
Please join us to hear authors Piper Cochrane & Marc Wanamaker present and sign their book, The Cochrane Brothers and the Making of Universal Pictures, a beautiful coffee table book of untold stories and unseen pictures, with a forward by Sandy Climan.
The five Scotch-Irish Cochrane brothers saw an opportunity in the nickelodeon business of the early 20th century, and partnered with unemployed friend Carl Laemmle to form Laemmle Film Service, followed by IMP, and later Universal Pictures. They created Hollywood’s Star System and slayed the formidable Edison Trust to unleash the industry, then created the distribution network in Asia for two major studios.

The Open Discussion Project & The Righteous Mind at Vroman’s Bookstore
