Brittany Ackerman & The Perpetual Motion Machine at Vroman’s Bookstore
Join us to welcome author Brittany Ackerman, in conversation with Ron Koertge, who will present and discuss her book, The Perpetual Motion Machine. Inspired by her brother’s high school science project—a perpetual motion machine that could save the world—this is a memoir in essays that attempts to save a sibling by depicting visceral pain that accompanies longing for some past impossibility. The collection has been a science project in its study of memory, in the calculation and plotting of the moments that make up a childhood. The preparation has been “in the field” and built upon lived experience, and the project has been one giant experiment—to see if they can all make it out alive.

Michelle Brittan Rosado is the author of Why Can’t It Be Tenderness, which won the Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry selected by Amy Nezhukumatathil (2018). Her chapbook, Theory on Falling into a Reef, won the inaugural Rick Campbell Prize. She is a PhD candidate in Creative Writing & Literature at USC.

Michelle Brittan Rosado is currently pursuing her PhD at USC, and is the author of the collection, Why Can’t It Be Tenderness, which won the Felix Pollak Prize in Poetry, as well as the chapbook, Theory on Falling into a Reef.
Corinna McClanahan Schroeder is the author of the award-winning collection of poetry, Inked, and is currently a PhD candidate at USC.
Douglas Manuel is the author of Testify, which won the 2017 IBPA Benjamin Franklin Award, and is book of potent poems that testify to the ambivalent moments that might rend or right us. He is also pursuing his PhD at USC, and is former Poetry Editor for Goldline Press.
