Roxanne Veletzos & The Girl They Left Behind at Book Soup

Carson Beker is a fiction writer, playwright, and story teller, and former fiction editor of Fourteen Hills: The SFSU Review and co-founder of the pirate art school The Escapery. They are a Lambda Literary Emerging Writer Fellow in Fiction, and a former Tin House Scholar.
Mark Gindi is a writer and psychiatrist living in Los Angeles. His work has appeared in The Los Angeles Review and the Hastings Center Report, among others. He is the psychiatric consultant to the Netflix show Maniac.
Brandi Spaethe is a writer, poet, educator, and literary arts advocate. Her chapbook, To You Who Wants In, was released in 2012, and she is the former program coordinator for Poets & Writers’ California Office. She now works for Lambda Literary and teaches at CSULA.

Adolfo Guzman-Lopez is a journalist and poet. In 1994 he co-founded the performance poetry group The Taco Shop Poets. Since 2000 he’s been a reporter at NPR affiliate KPCC-FM in Los Angeles, and he won the L.A. Press Club’s Radio Journalist of the Year in 2007.
Sara Borjas is a Chicana, a pocha, and a Fresno poet. Her debut collection, Heart Like a Window, Mouth Like a Cliff, is forthcoming from Noemi Press in 2019. She teaches Creative Writing at UC Riverside.
Armine Iknadossian immigrated to the U.S. from Lebanon in 1978 to escape the civil war. She is the author of All That Wasted Fruit, and after teaching English for 20 years, she wrote United States of Love & Other Poems (2015).

Douglas Brown is an educator, writer and DJ. He is the author of ICON, a new collection of poetry form Writ Large Press in 2018, and Zero to Three (University of Georgia, 2014), winner of the 2013 Cave Canem Poetry Prize selected by US Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith. He also co-authored a chapbook with Geoffrey Davis, Begotten (URB Books, 2016), and is co-founder and curator of un::fade::able – The Requiem for Sandra Bland, a quarterly reading series.
Douglas Kearney has published six books, most recently, Buck Studies (Fence Books, 2016). His collection of writing on poetics and performativity, Mess and Mess and (Noemi Press, 2015) was called “an extraordinary book” by Publisher’s Weekly, and his third poetry collection, Patter (Red Hen Press, 2014) examined miscarriage infertility, and parenthood and was a finalist for the California Book Award. He teaches creative writing at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities.
Doug Knott has been writing and performing poetry in Southern California for more than 20 years. He is the author of the collection, Small Dogs Bark Cartoons, and many chapbooks. He has been published in numerous journals and anthologies, and has written, produced and taught poetry video production.

Malcolm Friend Poetry Reading & Conversation at the Culver Center for the Arts, Riverside
Inlandia Institute hosts a poetry reading event and conversation to hear Pittsburg poet and winner of the 2017 Hillary Gravendyk Prize, Malcolm Friend, in a celebratory reading and launch of his prize-winning collection, Our Bruises Kept Singing Purple.
In the spirit of community-building, Friend will read alongside three other poets: Sara Borjas and Micah Chatterton, both Hillary Gravendyk Prize finalists, and Rachelle Cruz, whose Hillary Gravendyk Prize-winning book, God’s Will for Monsters, also won a 2018 American Book Award.
Sara Borjas is a Chicana, a pocha, and a Fresno poet. Her debut collection, Heart Like a Window, Mouth Like a Cliff, is forthcoming from Noemi Press in 2019. Rachelle Cruz is from Hayward, California, and is the author of: God’s Will for Monsters, which won the 2016 Hillary Gravendyk Regional Poetry Prize (Inlandia, 2017), Self-Portrait as Rumor and Blood (Dancing Girl Press, 2012), and co-editor with Melissa Sipin of Kuwento: Lost Things, an anthology of Philippine Myths (Carayan Press, 2015). She lives, writes and teaches in Southern California.

Ron Baca is a Boyle Heights resident, longtime educator at Cal State L.A., at Hollenbeck and Belvedere Junior High Schools, and at Roosevelt High School. He is the author of the chapbook, An Encounter with Amiri Baraka in Los Angeles.
Lory Bedikian is the author of The Book of Lamenting (Anhinga Press, 2011), winner of the 2010 Philip Levine Prize for Poetry. She teaches poetry workshops in Los Angeles.
