Tracy Dougherty & Leaving the Gay Place at Skylight Bookstore

Amber West is a poet and educator born and raised in San Luis Obispo. Her chapbook, Daughter Eraser, was published by Finishing Line Press in 2015, and her full length collection, Hen & God, by The Word Works in 2017. She teaches writing at UCLA and lives in North Hollywood with her family.
LaLa DeVille is a writer, self-published book author, poet and spoken word artist. In 2016 she released The Last Yesterday, and earlier this year she released 31 Days of Mood. She is CEO of Everybody Publishing, and creator of Everybody Radio Poetry, where she co-hosts her weekly podcast, The Exquisite Spit Open Mic Hour.
Musical guest: Jonny Cifuentes is a singer/songwriter, bassist, and poet from L.A. focused on writing material influenced by dreams, personal experiences, vulnerability and love.

National Adoption Awareness Reading at Beyond Baroque
Each year, November is recognized as National Adoption awareness Month. While all adoption issues are important, the particular focus of this month is the adoption of children currently in foster care. Through writings and discussions begun at Cielo Galleries and hosted by Writ Large Press in September, 2017, we launched a monthly writing & expression workshop to raise our voices and concerns in our work. Please arrive early.
This event is hosted by Julayne Lee, an adopted Korean American and author of Not My White Savior: Poems, in the Poets Garden.
This reading event and discussion with adoptees of color will also include:
Sarah Harris is mixed Korean heritage (Hapa), and was placed for adoption and relocated to Baltimore, MD by Holt International, where she was raised by her parents along with two younger sisters, one adopted from Korea and one not. The family moved to California in 1978 and she never left. She is a blogger and is raising two teenagers.
Jessica Sun Lee is the author of the novels Keurium (2018) and An Ode to the Humans Who’ve Loved and Left Me; author and illustrator of two children’s books; and the literary non-fiction, It Wasn’t Love. Her work aims to provoke understanding of the oft overlooked.
Irene Suico Soriano is an immigrant Filipina American poet, independent literary curator, and the author of Primates from the Archipelago (2017). She founded and coordinated the SoCal reading series “Wrestling tigers” at JANM and was featured in the L.A. Times for the groundbreaking NEA funded “World Beyond Poetry Festival” that featured over 100+ poets from diverse L.A. communities.
Jennifer Varenchik is Native American from the Tohono O’odham Nation of Arizona. She is a writer/director who started as an actress, who moved behind the camera to produce more accurate depictions of American Indians. Adopted as an infant, and raised in a predominantly Caucasian small town, she now works for the day where Indigenous people are common in the media.
