Loose Lips Poetry Reading at Topanga Public Library
The Loose Lips Poetry Reading is dedicated to bringing a diverse array of the best contemporary poets to Topanga and to provide audiences and authors with a poetic forum and community.
Our featured October reader is Angel Garcia, the author of Teeth Never Sleep, winner of the 2018 CantoMundo Poetry Prize, and currently a PhD student in the Creative Writing Department at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. He is also co-founder of a nonprofit, Gente Organizada, working to educate, empower and engage communities through grassroots organizing.

Brian Dunlap is a native Angeleño who still lives in Los Ángeles. He is the author of the chapbook Concrete River (Finishing Line, 2018). Dunlap is also the winner of the 2018 Jeff Marks Memorial Poetry Prize from december magazine judged by former Los Ángeles Poet Laureate Luis J. Rodriguez. His poems and book reviews have been published in Angel City Review, CCM-Entropy, California Quarterly and Dryland, among others. He runs the blog site www.losangelesliterature.wordpress.com, a resource to explore L.A.’s vast literary culture.

The New Series: Mid-Life Crisis at Beyond Baroque
Each installment of The New Series features original work commissioned from three authors on a single theme.
This fall Beyond Baroque turns fifty, and has asked three superb writers to create new writing on the theme of the Midlife Crisis, and hosting a makeover party to celebrate changes to our bookstore and lobby. Our featured artists are:
Hector Tobar is the author of five books, both fiction and nonfiction, including Barbarian Nurseries and Deep Down Dark, and was a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist for coverage of the 1992 L.A. riots while at the Los Angeles Times. He is now an associate professor at UC Irvine, and has taught at Pomona College and the University of Oregon. His fifth novel is forthcoming in 2109.
Dana Johnson is the author of the story collections In the Not Quite Dark and Break Any Woman Down, and of the novel Elsewhere California. Born and raised in and around Los Angeles, she is a professor of English at USC.
Brendan Constantine has published his work in numerous journals, and his most recent collection is Dementia, My Darling. He teaches poetry at the Windward School and offers classes to hospitals, foster homes, veterans, and the elderly.
