This incisive, shape-shifting tour-de-force is a genre bending mix of lyric prose, science fiction, horror, and visual collage exploring the erotic undercurrents of American perceptions of Japanese culture and identity. The novel opens with a slyly comic report by a Japanese executive describing the Bluefin tuna his company purchased at the fish market, as well as the dissolution of his marriage to a Sansei wife. When an American writer begins investigating the report’s author, the issues of cultural appropriation, conflicting realities, and capitalistic excesses of both the U.S. and Japan, all come into play.

Jean Guerrero & Crux at Vroman’s Bookstore
Author Jena Guerrero joins us to present, discuss and sign her new book, Crux: A Cross-Border Memoir. Throughout the author’s childhood, her father was an erratic and elusive presence. Poesia Salvi: Voces de la Diaspora at Cielo Galleries Studios
This event is intentionally only in Spanish to extend the mission of V Festival internacional de Poesia “Amada Libertad” which was to cultivate poetry within communities by creating literary events for community members of all ages. Additionally, this event is meant to honor our ancestral language and the immigrant communities of Los Angeles by creating space for Spanish speaking or bilingual members so they can experience poetry and discussion of relevant cultural issues in their native tongue.
Cynthia Guardado is the author of the poetry collection, Endeavor (2017, World Stage Press), and is a professor of English and creative writing at Fullerton College.
Janel Pineda is a poet and writer whose work concerns the experiences of one’s family as immigrants from Salvador to live in the U.S., and explores the social, feminist, and contemporary political aspects of that experience.
Willy Palomo is working on his Master’s in poetry and Latin American Studies at Indiana University, where he was honored in 2017 for his work with undocumented communities, and his written work has been widely published.
Javier Zamora tells of his immigration journey in 1999, and his group’s abandonment by a coyote in Oaxaca, as part of his collection, Unaccompanied (September 2017, Copper Canyon Press), and explores immigration and the civil war’s impact on his family.

Rattle Poetry Reading at Flintridge Bookstore

Athena Kildegaard is the author of five books of poetry, and her poem “Allurement” appears in Rattle #60. She teaches at University of Minnesota-Morris.
