Michael Scott Moore & The Desert and the Sea at Vroman’s Bookstore
Author Michael Scott Moore joins us to present, discuss and sign his new book, The Desert and the Sea: 977 Days Captive on the Somali Pirate Coast. In January 2012 the author traveled to the Horn of Africa to write about piracy and ways to end it. In a terrible twist of fate, he himself was kidnapped and subsequently held captive by Somali pirates. Yet the author’s own struggle is just part of the story. Hiram Sims was born and raised in various parts of Los Angeles. Sims is a poet, and a Professor of Creative Writing, teaching at the Los Angeles Film School. He is also the founder of the Community Literature Initiative, a publishing program for Los Angeles writers who want to publish books here at USC. He is also the co-founder of World Stage Press.
Jerry Garcia is a poet, photographer and film maker from Los Angeles. His work has been widely published. He has two books of poetry, the full-length collection, On Summer Solstice Road (2016) and a chapbook, Hitchhiking with the Guilty (2010).
Dennis Cruz has been writing and performing his poetry for over 20 years, and has been published in anthologies as well as online publications. He has lectured at schools and LA County Jails, for men AND women. His latest collection, Moth Wing Tea, is available from Punk Hostage Press.
Curtis Hayes has worked in sawmills, greasy spoons and as a grip, gaffer, set builder, and camera assistant in film productions. He has been a print journalist and screenwriter, and his poetry has been featured in Chiron Review, and other small presses.

Jubi Arriola-Headley is a first generation American born to Bajan (Barbadian) parents in Boston, Massachusetts, where he was also raised. A VONA/Voices and Lambda Literary alumnus, he now lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he works as a freelance writer and nonprofit consultant.
Ron L. Dowell is a lifelong resident of the Watts and Compton areas of Los Angeles. Employed for 38 years with Los Angeles County, his unique perspective on local urban communities informs many of his stories. He is working on a collection of short stories.
Natalie Mislang Mann is an educator with a Master of Arts in Humanities from San Francisco State University, and is currently working on a memoir based on her experiences growing up in a multi-ethnic family in the San Fernando Valley.
Angela M. Sanchez is a Los Angeles native and UCLA alumna. Working on the nexus of higher education, policy, and the nonprofit sector, she focuses on narratives that have been typically underrepresented in children’s literature. She self-published a children’s book, Scruffy and the Egg, about single parenthood and homelessness, and is currently working on her first YA novel.
Francisco Uribe is a writer from Long Beach, California, with BA degrees in history and English from UCLA. He works for a nonprofit where he mentors at-risk youth, and is currently working on a collection of short stories.
