KPCC’s Unheard Stories in Monterey Park at East Los Angeles College (ELAC)
Please join us for the second season of KPCC’s “Unheard L.A. – the stories of where you live” when we meet at ELAC to bring experiences and voices from all over the region to your communities. Join host Bruce A. Lemon, Jr. for the live show and stick around afterward for a mixer with the participants and your fellow attendees.
ELAC is in Monterey Park, a diverse city of many firsts. It is home to the first Chinese American mayor in the country and the first Asian American city in the continental United States. It is also the birthplace of the sealed potato chip bag, and the home of the Vincent Price art Museum, which is located on ELAC’s campus.

Join author Diane Guerrero to hear her present her personal story of the real light of undocumented immigrant in her new book for middle grade readers, My Family Divided: One Girl’s Journey of Home, Loss, and Hope.
Before landing a spot on the megahit Netflix show Orange Is the New Black, before wowing audiences as Lina on Jane the Virgin, and before her work on immigration reform, she was a young girl living in Boston. One day, while Guerrero was at school, her undocumented parents were taken from their home, detained and deported. Her life was turned upside down, but her story is both heartbreaking and hopeful.
