LiveTalksLA presents a series of literary events (and podcasts) to meet and hear cultural and business leaders present and discuss their work. Tonight, Patton Oswalt discusses his late wife Michelle McNamara’s book, I’ll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman’s Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer. Oswalt has chronicled two obsessions here, one light and one dark. The Golden State Killer, which she was researching, is the dark half; Michelle Mc Namara’s quest to solve these crimes is the light half.
Patton Oswalt is a comedian, actor and writer who, he says, “was married to a crime fighter for a decade.” Michelle McNamara was an experienced true crime journalist, determined to find the violent psychopath who committed fifty sexual assaults and perpetrated ten sadistic murders. She was writing this story at the time of her sudden death.

Wrestling with the Devil at Skylight Bookstore
Join us meet and hear author Ngugi Wa Thiong’ O discuss his memoir Wrestling with the Devil: A Prison Memoir. Written in the early 1980s and never before published in America, this compelling prison memoir gives us aa rare glimpse into the hidden story behind one of the author’s most famous novels. This story recounts both the intense drama and painful challenges of writing fiction under twenty-four hour surveillance. Jailed without charge in Kenya’s Kamiti Maximum Security Prison, he was quarantined from the general population and forced to live with eighteen other political prisoners. Still he decided to write a novel on toilet paper, the only paper to which he had access. That book became a classic, as well as the first novel written in the Kenyan language Gikuyu.

The Merry Spinster at Skylight Bookstore

Claudia Hernandez is a poet, author, editor, translator and bilingual educator, born and raised in Guatemala. Her latest book is Women, Mujeres, Ixoq: Revolutionary Visions (2107). She is the founder of Today’s Revolutionary Women of Color.
Ryan Scott Nance’s poetry and translations have been published in Graffiti Rag, The Diagram, Mantis, and Hinches de Poesia, among others. He works as an experience designer in L.A.
Andrea Guiterrez, writer, educator and editor, is an academic administrator at Cal State Los Angeles. Her recent works include the short play Los Amigas, poetry in the Mujeres de Maiz annual zine, and several articles in make/shift magazine.
Luis Antonio Pichardo is an author, educator, and the founder and creative director of DSTL Arts, which offers creative writing workshops and zine publishing events in and around Los Angeles.
