41st Annual Writers Week Conference at UC Riverside
Join us for the 41st Annual Writers Week Conference, the longest-running FREE literary event in California, which attracts both seasoned authors and those just beginning their careers. This year’s event takes place from February 12-18, and is hosted by the UCR Department of Creative Writing and Tom Lutz, the Writers Week director.
On Monday, February 12th join us to hear:
Tess Taylor is a poet, an on-air poetry reviewer for NPR’s “All Things Considered,” and the chair of the poetry committee of the National Book Critics Circle. She is the author of the chapbook, Misremembered World, the book The Forage House, in which she explores her personal history as a descendant of Thomas Jefferson, and the author of Work and Days, which was named one of the Best Poetry Books of 2016 by The New York Times. Hadara Bar-Nadav is a poet and a Professor of English at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. She is the author of two chapbooks and three poetry collections. She also co-authored the bestselling textbook Writing Poems (8th edition) with Michelle Boisseau. Her latest book of poetry, The New Nudity was published in 2017. (Reading at 4 pm)

Octavia Butler Event at Altadena Library District
Please join Altadena Library for a special look at the life of science fiction author and Altadenan Octavia E. Butler. Presenter Natalie Russell is the Assistant Curator of Literary Collections at the Huntington Library, and curator of the recent exhibit “Octavia Butler: Telling My Stories.”

Rachel Lyon at Book Soup

Roxane Gay at the Hammer Museum
Please join us for our Some Favorite Writers reading series to hear Roxane Gay, one of today’s most astute cultural critics. She is the author of the best-selling Bad Feminist, the novel Untamed State, and several short story collections. Raw and beautifully written, her most recent book, Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body, is a remarkable work about pain, healing, strength and coming to terms with oneself and one’s body.

Chris Buckley is a poet, memoirist, editor, critic, and professor, and the author of over 50 books and chapbooks, including Star Apocrypha (2001), Sky (2004), Modern History (2008), Rolling the Bones (2010), and White Shirt (2011). He is a Professor Emeritus at UC Riverside. (Reading at 3:30 pm)
Micah Chatterton writes, edits, teaches, and tends library at various locations in the Inland Empire, where he grew up. His work has appeared and been featured in numerous journals. (Reading at 5 pm)
Marco Maisto is a writer whose work explores the emotional landscape of conceivable worlds. Traces of a Fifth Column is the title of his first full-length book, and he has been nominated for a Pushcart Prize for his long poem, The Loneliness of the Middle-Distance Transmissions Aggregator. (Reading at 5 pm)
Krys Lee published her debut novel, How I Became a North Korean last year after moving back to Korea where she was born. She grew up, went to school, and wrote her first book in the U.S.: Drifting House, a collection of stories. She now teaches in Seoul at Yonsei University. (Reading at 6:30 pm)

James Luna is an internationally renowned performance and installation artist with more than 30 years of experience. He has performed at many venues, including New York’s MOMA, Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. (Performing at 1 pm)
Nanette Deetz is a Dakota, Lakota, Cherokee, and German poet, journalist, educator and musician with the band Redbird Giving. She teaches drama and creative writing at the Da Vinci Center for Gifted Children, and with the Department of Rehabilitation. (Reading at 1 pm)
Josh Emmons has taught creative writing at several universities, currently UC Riverside, and is the author of two novels and a short story collection. His second novel, Prescription for a Superior Existence, was published in 2008, and his latest, A Moral Tale and Other Moral Tales, is forthcoming. (Reading at 2:30 pm)
Gina Hahai was born in Iran and moved to the U.S. on the night that Elvis Presley died. She is the author most recently of the social satire The Luminous Heart of Jonah S., and her novels have been translated into 18 languages. She has taught writing at UCLA and USC. (Reading at 4 pm)
Vickie Vertiz is a poet and UC Riverside MFA alumna, who teaches creative writing workshops nationwide and works with the nonprofit 826LA. She is the author of the poetry collections, Swallows (2013) and Palm Frond with Its Throat Cut (2017). (Reading at 5:30 pm)

Tee Franklin is a queer, black, disabled comic writer and advocare from New Jersey, and won a grant for Bingo Love, a Kickstarter-funded novella representing the lives of queer black women. Bingo Love will be released on Valentine’s Day 2018 in comic shops everywhere. (Reading at 11 am)
John Jennings is a Professor of Media and Cultural Studies and a Cooperating Faculty Member in the Department of Creative Writing at UC riverside. His work centers around intersectional narratives regarding identity politics and popular media. He is co-editor of the Eisner Award-winning essay collection, The Blacker the Ink: Constructions of Black Identity in Comics and Sequential Art, and co-founder of numerous related organizations.(Reading at 1 pm)
Myriam Gurba is a Chicana writer, spoken-word artist, and visual artist, and a member of Sister Split, a lesbian Feminist art collective. She is the author of five chapbooks, and her book Dahlia Season: Stories and a Novella (2007) won the Edmund White Award for debut fiction. Her latest is a non-fiction novel titled Mean, which blends genres and styles and is about her own coming-of-age journey.(Reading at 2:30 pm)
Maxine Hong Kingston, this year’s LARB/UCR Creative Writing Lifetime Achievement Award honoree, is a Chinese-American novelist, journalist, feminist icon, anti-war advocate, and Professor Emerita at her alma mater, UC Berkeley. Her extensive list of publications includes The Woman Warrior: Memoir of a Girlhood Among Ghosts. Her works have won numerous awards and honors, and have been widely taught and revered. Poetry Slam at Children’s Book World–Kids Event, 7-14
Please join us for our Poetry Slam #4: Who Do You Love?, with Hope Anita Smith. We are looking for lovers of the spoken word, ages 7-14, to recite their original poetic tribute to a person, place or thing who they admire. Each poet will get three minutes to recite or rap a poem or lyric they’ve written. We will select one poet from each age group, judged on content and performance, to receive a $25 CBW gift certificate; all other participating poets will receive $5 gift certificates. Our judge, two time Coretta Scott King Award winning poet Hope Anita Smith, will be signing her books and available for writing tips to the participating poets.

41st Annual Writers Week Conference at UC Riverside
Join us for the 41st Annual Writers Week Conference, the longest-running FREE literary event in California, which attracts both seasoned authors and those just beginning their careers. This year’s event takes place from February 12-18, and is hosted by the UCR Department of Creative Writing and Tom Lutz, the Writers Week director.

Roxane Gay is a Haitian-American fiction writer, essayist, critic, editor and professor. She is a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times on issues of gender, race, politics, culture, current events, and more. She is the author most recently of Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body, and has written the novel An Untamed State (2014) and Bad Feminist (2014), among other works.
