Attica Uprising at ALOUD Reading Series at Central Library, LAPL

Join us when the ALOUD Reading series hosts Pulitzer Prize winning historian Heather Ann Thompson, in conversation with Kelly Lytle Hernandez, director of Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA, to discuss and sign her new book, Blood in the Water: The Attica Prison Uprising of 1971 and Its Legacy. This book sheds new light on the infamous riot as a key civil rights story of the last century, chronicling the horrific conditions that led to 1,300 prisoners taking over the facility, and the violent retaking that resulted in the killing of 39 men and severe wounding of more than one hundred others. The author also recounts the ensuing 45-year fight for justice.

Billy Vera Memoir at Book Soup

Poetry y Pan Open Mic Featuring Poet: Luivette Resto

Luivette Resto, a mother, teacher, poet, and Wonder Woman fanatic, was born in Aguas Buenas, Puerto Rico but proudly raised in the Bronx. Her first book of poetry Unfinished Portrait was published in 2008 by Tia Chucha Press and later named a finalist for the 2009 Paterson Poetry Prize. Her second book Ascension was published in April 2013 courtesy of Tia Chucha Press. She has also published in numerous journals and anthologies. Currently, she lives in the Los Angeles area with her three revolutionaries.

Chicano Sketches at Café Con Libros

Join us to hear the Suarez brothers present their father’s book, Chicano Sketches: Short Stories, by Mario Suarez (University of Arizona Prress).

Mario Suárez was one of the earliest Chicano writers. He was one of five children born to Mexican immigrants in Arizona. Most of Suárez’s literature takes place in “El Hoyo” (The Hole), the name of the Mexican American barrio in Tucson, Arizona, where he was raised. Mario Suárez’s writing pre-dates the Chicano literature movement in the ’60s and ’70s. One reason his work should be heralded is for telling the immigrant story and documenting life in El Hoyo before its demise.
