Ron Chernow and Grant at Vroman’s Bookstore (off-site)

downloadPlease join us to hear the Pulitzer Prize winning author for Hamilton, Ron Chernow, discuss and sign Grant, his newest masterful biography, about Ulysses S. Grant’s life as a general and president, whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency. In conversation with USC professor and author William Deverell, Chernow offers this sweeping and dramatic portrait, that finds the threads that bind the disparate stores together, and makes sense of all sides of Grant’s life, contradictions, and accomplishments.

Andrea Wulf at CalTech University

Come to hear historian and author Andrea Wulf discuss and sign her book, The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859). Wulf tells the story of the great thinker and intrepid explorer who predicted human-induced climate change in 1800, and whose writings inspired naturalists such as Darwin and Goethe, as well as politicians, such as Thomas Jefferson. her talk focuses on the bond between the arts and sciences, between imagination, poetry and meticulous observation.

Andre Wulf will also give lectures on October 15 and October 17 at the Huntington Library.

Bridgette Bianca is a professor and poet from South Central Los Angeles. Her poetry serves as a witness to moments most forgot or ignore. Her poems do not look away, no matter how much it hurts.

Mario Ontiveros & Judith Baca at Vroman’s Bookstore

Join us to hear Mario Ontiveros and Judith Baca discuss and sign Baca: Art, Collaboration, and Mural Making. The renowned muralist Judith Baca spearheaded The Great Wall of Los Angeles, a landmark half-mile long mural executed by more than four hundred artists and artists-in-the-making. Scholars from across America join forces to study this work, its inception and creation, and this book shares how Baca was inspired by the works of Los Tes Grandes, and led her team to paint the history of Southern California, which is now a cultural landmark.

Austin Strauss Memorial at Beyond Baroque

Join us for a memorial for the late Austin Strauss, who was the founder and co-host of The Poetry Connection on KPFK-FM from 1981-1996. His late wife, the poet Wanda Coleman and he collaborated on a sequence of poems celebrating their three decades of marriage, The Love Project, and his poems were widely published.
