Austin Merrill and Everyday Africa at Eso Won Bookstore

An American Genocide at ALOUD Reading Series, LAPL

During the Gold Rush period in California, the Native American population plunged from about 150,000 to 30,000, much of the decline due to state-sponsored slaughter. Addressing the aftermath of colonization and historical trauma, author and UCLA historian Benjamin Madley, with Greg Sarris, the Chairman of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria in northern California, will discuss Madley’s book, An American Genocide: The United States and the California Indian Catastrophe, 1846-1873.

Wendall Thomas, with Lost Luggage, at the Last Bookstore

We are pleased to present the first LA reading of Wendall Thomas’s debut novel Lost Luggage, and her research into the world of endangered animal smuggling and how she was able to turn a “dead” script into a publishing deal. Lost Luggage went from an unproduced screenplay to a two book deal, and the author teaches in the Graduate Film School at UCLA, lectures internationally on screenwriting, and has worked widely in the entertainment business.

Gillian Conoley & Martha Ronk at Poetic Research Bureau

Gillian Conoley is the author of seven collections of poetry, and she has been widely anthologized. Her work is haunted by narrative and is inventive and exploratory She has taught at several universities and won several Pushcart Prizes.

Martha Ronk is the author of several collections of poetry, including Ocular Proof (2016), and has written short stories and an ironic memoir. She is currently Professor of English at Occidental College.
