Brian Slagel at Book Soup
Come to hear Brain Slagel discuss and sign his book, For the Sake of Heaviness: The History of Metal Blade Records. Slagel began as a metal-obsessed kid who launched a fanzine and landed a record store job before cobbling together what he assumed would be a one-off compilation of fledgling bands from the L.A. In 1982 the Metal Massacre LP included the recordings of Steeler, Malice, Ratt, and Metallica, and with its success it propelled him into creating a proper record label.

Book Club at Flintridge Bookstore
Join our Brown Bag Book Club to participate in a discussion of News of the World, by Paulette Jiles. In 1870, in North Texas, Captain Jefferson Kyle Kidd travels from town to town giving readings from the latest newspapers, bringing news of the world to isolated towns on the Texas frontier. In Wichita Falls, he is asked to return a captive girl to her relatives near Sn Antonio, 400 miles to the south. The old man and the ten-year-old start the hazardous journey, but her attitude, plus the bandits and Comanche raids, and violent weather, only add to the dilemma of the girl’s relatives, who don’t want her. This is a story of courage, honor and truth, which come in the unlikeliest of people.
