Literary Pachanga at Skylight Books
Join us for a Literary Pachanga showcasing three Chicano authors to celebrate Southern California’s ties to the Ellis Island of the West –El Paso, Texas.
Jesus Salvador Trevino is a writer/director whose TV director credits include Criminal Minds, Law & Order, etc. He will present a short story collection, Return to Arroyo Grande.
Alicia Gaspar de Alba has published eleven books, and will read from Calligraphy of the Witch. She has been a professor and is now chair of the LGBTQ Studies Department at UCLA.
Christine Granados received the Sandra Cisneros Prize for her first book of fiction, Brides and Sinners in El Chuco, and will read from her second book, a novella and short stories, Fight like a Man and Other Stories We Tell Our Children.

YA Author Event at Gatsby’s Bookstore–Teen Event
Join us for a launch party to meet Julia Walton, who will discuss and sign, Words on Bathroom Walls, the story of Adam, who has just been diagnosed with schizophrenia. He sees and hears people who aren’t there. Rebecca, a beautiful girl who understands him; the Mob Boss, who harasses him; and Jason, the naked guy who’s unfailingly polite. It should be easy to separate the real from the unreal, but Adam can’t.
Still there’s hope. As Adam starts fresh at a new school, he begins a drug that helps him ignore his visions. Suddenly everything seems possible, until the drug begins to fail.

Michael Sedano, founder of La Bloga, which showcases Latino arts, will serve as Master of Ceremonies to Chicano writers:
Jesus Salvador Trevino, is a writer/director whose TV credits include Criminal Minds, Law & Order Criminal Intent and many others. He has written/directed/produced several PBS documentaries about Latinos. He will read from his short story collection, Return to Arroyo Grande (2015), which won the 2016 American Book Award.
Alicia Gaspar de Alba has published eleven books, and since 1994 she has been a professor of Chicano Studies, English, and Gender Studies at UCLA, and is currently Chair of the LGBTQ Studies program. She will read from Calligraphy of the Witch (2007).
Andrea Gutierrez is a writer, editor and educator in Los Angeles, whose work has been widely published. She is on the editorial staff at make/shift magazine, and will read from her works published in Huizache magazine.

Randall Mann, Miguel Murphy & Aaron Smith at Book Soup
Join us to hear Cruel Summer, featuring poets Randall Mann, Miguel Murphy, and Aaron Smith, in a special presentation of their works.
Randall Mann has been hailed as one of Contemporary American poetry’s most daring formalists, using craft as a way of expertly exploring racy subjects with trenchant aplomb and wit. His Proprietary: Poems depicts the culture of corporate America, including gay life in the wildly disparate worlds of San Francisco and northern Florida.
Miguel Murphy’s Detainee becomes eerily familiar as each poem explores “what is love without arrows?” and tells us “you don’t even know / the beast you are.”
Aaron Smith’s collection, Primer, grapples with the ugly realities of the private self, in which desire feels more like a trap than fulfillment. Morality is at the center of our relationship with others, and to our own sense of self.

Jeff Solomon at Skylight Bookstore
Join us as Jeff Solomon , Assistant Professor of English and Women, Gender, and Sexuality studies at Wake Forest University, discusses his book, So Famous and so Gay: the Fabulous Potency of Truman Capote and Gertrude Stein, which asks the question: How and why, in a time of homophobia and closeted sexuality, did two openly gay writers become mass-market celebrities? This is addressed in the context of the fact that other gay writers such as Gore Vidal, Tennessee Williams, and James Baldwin could not manage the same feats at the time. This book reveals what Capote’s and Stein’s debuts, Other Times, Other Voices, Other Rooms and Three Lives, held for queer readers in terms of gay identity and psychology—and for gay authors who wrote in their wake.

Rattle Poets at Flintridge Bookstore
Please join us to hear Rattle Press poets Katherine Lo and Aaron Poochigian read and discuss their work.
Katherine Lo is a teacher, traveler, and author of The Cellar (2014), and her poem “The Headline Reads Processed Meat Causes Cancer, Says WHO” appeared in Rattle Poets Respond series in November 2015.
Aaron Poochigian earned a PhD in Classics from the University of Minnesota and an MFA in Poetry from Columbia University. He is the author of two books orattle.com/readings/f translations. His first book of original poetry, The Cosmic Purr, won the 2016 Able Muse Poetry Prize, and his second book Manhattanite will be out in the Fall of 2017.
