Libyan Author at ALOUD, Central Library
Hisham Matar, in conversation with Louise Steinman, will discuss and sign The Return Fathers, Sons and the Land in Between. When Matar was a university student in England, his father was one of the regime’s most prominent critics in exile. His earlier book, In the Country of Men, a chronicle of his journey home to his native Libya after the fall of Qaddafi in search of the truth behind his father’s disappearance and kidnapping, was a finalist for the Man Booker Prize and National Book Critics Circle Award. This book, The Return, weaves the intimacy of a memoir with the suspense of journalism, to offer a reflection on exile, art, family, and the history of a revolution.

Celebration of Wanda Coleman at UCLA
Please join us for a celebration of Wanda Coleman (1946-2013) and her life and work in conjunction with the opening of her papers at UCLA Special Collections. Coleman’s thirty-year relationship with Black Sparrow Press resulted in twelve books in various genres. Considered the unofficial poet laureate of Los Angeles, she also wrote short novels, nonfiction, and plays, as well as scripts for film and television, winning an Emmy in 1976.
Los Angeles writers Tisa Bryant, Sesshu Foster, Douglas Kearney, Harryette Mullen, and Austin Strauss will speak about the influence Coleman has had on their own writing and lives. In addition there will be an exhibit featuring highlights from Coleman’s papers and a reception following the event.

Posada Book Release Party at Avenue 50 Studio
Join us for the book release party of Posada: Offerings of Witness and Refuge, by Xochitl-Julisa Bermejo.
