Fourth Sundays presents 2016 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Prize winner Ross Gay for a poetry reading. Distinguished poet, and teacher at Indiana University, Gay is the author of three volumes of poetry: Catalog of Unabashed Gratitude (2015), Bringing the Shovel Down (2011), and Against Which (2006). He has received fellowships from Cave Canem, the Bread Loaf Writer’s Conference, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the Radcliffe Institute.

John Prendergast at Claremont McKenna College
The Athenaeum hosts John Prendergast who is the founding director of the Enough Project, an initiative to end genocide and crimes against humanity. He is also the co-founder of the Sentry, a new investigative initiative focused on dismantling networks financing conflicts and atrocities. Along with his State Department and related work, he has written or co-authored ten books, his latest being Unlikely Brothers: Our Story of Adventure, Loss and Redemption (2012) a dual memoir about the Big Brother program.

John Keene at Otis Visiting Writers Series
John Keene is the author of the novels Annotations and Counternarratives, as well as several other works, including the poetry collection Seismosis, with artist Christopher Stackhouse, and a translation of Brazilian author Hilda Hilst’s novel, Letters from a Seducer. Keene has served as managing editor of Callaloo and taught at Northwestern. He currently teaches at Rutgers University-Newark and lives in New York.

All Lit Up Event at Chevaliers’ Bookstore
All Lit Up is a collaborative effort, and this month our special guests are: poets Carine Topal and Jacqueline Suskind, novelist Tony DuShane, and musician Michael Miller.
Tony DuShane adapted his first novel Confessions of a Teenage Jesus Jerk to a screenplay directed by Eric Stolz. The film is finished and set to release in 2017. He writes for numerous publications and teaches at UCLA Extension.
Jacqueline Suskin is a writer, performance poet and artist and author of The Collected and Go Ahead and Like It. Known for her project Poem Store which has taken her around the country, she works with the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities as a Turnaround artist, visiting many high schools and universities.
Carine Topal has been twice nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Her published collections include In the Heaven of Never Before and Bed of Want. Her third book, Tattooed, is a personal history of the Holocaust.
Michael Miller’s music has been described as “brooding acoustic ruminations and multi-layered, melancholic pop symphonies.”

Brendan Constantine is a poet whose work has appeared in many journals, and whose most recent collection is Dementia, My Darling (2016). A popular performer, he has presented to audiences throughout the U.S. and Europe. He teaches poetry at the Windward School in Los Angeles, and regularly conducts workshops for hospitals, foster homes, and with the Alzheimer’s Poetry Project.
Jenny Yang is a writer and stand-up comedian who produces the comedy tour, Disoriented Comedy, and the Comedy Comedy Festival. She was honored as a White house Champion of Change, and is a frequent collaborator on viral Buzzfeed videos. She is a regular commentator on NPR, NBC News, BBC News and many other outlets.
Azeem M. Khan is creator of Whalesound, a lofi home recording project developed as an audio journal. He is also a member of the South Asian garage psych band Doctors and Engineers, who will release their album in November. He is also a member of the band Elephants With Guns.
Varuna Gunasekera is a table player of the Farukhabad gharana style. His performances include accompaniment for Indian Classical, Sri Lankan Classical/Folk, and Western Fusion Music.

FPAC 25: Samu’t Sari w/3rd Annual Katipunan Poetry Slam at FPAC
FPAC 25 is the 25th Annual Festival of Philippine Arts and Culture at beautiful Echo Park Lake, and this event is FREE! The popular festival, the City of Los Angeles’ Filipino American Event, is the longest-running Filipino cultural celebration in Southern California. Audiences can expect to enjoy traditional and contemporary Filipino food, music, dance, crafts and culture. This year’s theme, “Samu’t Sari: Showcasing the Diverse Creative Tapestry of the FilAm Community,” lends its meaning to the Tagalog phrase samu’t sari, which loosely translates to “diversity.” While certainly a hot topic in today’s society, FilAm Arts focuses on the vast contributions of Filipino American artists to the creative tapestry of the City.
