After Abel, and Other Stories at CSUN
Mical Lemberger, finalist for the National Jewish Book Award Goldberg Prize for debut fiction, will discuss her award winning book, After Abel, and Other Stories. In her book she creatively explores the lives of famous, infamous, and little-known women of the Bible and presents the reasons behind their actions.
Lemberger holds an MA and PhD in English from UCLA and a BA in English and Religion from Barnard College. She teaches at American Jewish University.

Jaqueline Winespear at Vroman’s
Jacqueline Winespear discusses and signs Journey to Munich, the latest in her Maisie Dobbs series. It’s early 1938, and Maisie Dobbs is back in England, where she is asked by the Secret Service to be their emissary to Germany on a mission to retrieve a British subject from Dachau, near Munich. Traveling to the heart of Nazi Germany she encounters unexpected dangers, and questions.

Rolling the R’s Anniversary Reading
Zamora Linmark will give a talk at Scripps College and read from his acclaimed multidisciplinary novel, Rolling the R’s, which was published twenty years ago. This book exploded the static, prescribed ideas of 1990s multiculturalism and ultimately became a staple of American literature courses.

Author Amina Hassan and Loren Miller Biography, Eso Wan
Author Amina Hassan will discuss and sign her book, Loren Miller: Civil Rights Attorney and Journalist. Born to a slave and a white midwesterner in 1903, Loren Miller lived the quintessential American success story, blazing his own path from rural poverty to a position of power and influence, becoming one of the nation’s most prominent civil rights attorneys, and successfully fighting discrimination in housing and education alongside Thurgood Marshall.
In his work with the ACLU Loren Miller sought to halt the internment of West Coast Japanese American citizens, helped integrate the US military and the LA Fire Department, and defended black Muslims arrested in a deadly street battle with LAPD in 1964.

Graphic Novel at the Last Bookstore
The Last Bookstore presents Ozge Samanci and her new memoir, Dare to Disappoint: Growing Up in Turkey, an autobiographical graphic novel about a girl who loved the sea and imagined a life of adventure, while her parents and society demanded predictability.
Ozge Samanci is an artist and an assistant professor at Northwestern University. She makes comics and interactive art installations. She keeps an online comics journal Ordinary Things, since 2006.

Amina Hassan at Playa Vista Library
Amina Hassan will discuss her recent biography, Loren Miller: Civil Rights Attorney and Journalist. Black Mountain Poets Descendants at Hammer Museum

Laura Tillman at Vroman’s
Laura Tillman discusses and signs The Long Shadow of Small Ghosts: Murder and Memory in an American City. This book is a harrowing, profoundly personal investigation of the causes, effects, and communal toll of a deeply troubling crime, the brutal murder of three young children by their parents in the border city of Brownsville, Texas. In 2008 Laura Tillman covered this story for the Brownville Herald, and the questions it raised haunted her, including a connected six-year inquiry into the larger significance of such acts and their consequences to the larger community and its social issues.

Melissa Burch at Pages
Melissa Burch has worked as a writer, filmmaker, producer and former war journalist for the BBC, CBS, and other networks. Her team was one of the first documentary crews in the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War. She was just in her twenties when she traveled with the mujahdeen, filmed an attack on a Soviet convoy, slept with an Afghan commander, and climbed 14,000 foot mountains in the Hindu Kush. These experiences and many more are featured in her adventurous spiritual memoir, My Journey Through War and Peace: Explorations of a Young Filmmaker, Feminist and Spiritual Seeker.

Santa Monica Reads Book Discussion: Station Eleven
Trained facilitators lead discussions of our 2016 Santa Monica Reads featured book. Station Eleven, by Emily St. John Mandel, begins in the present as child actress Kirsten Raymonde watches actor Arthur Leander die onstage during a performance of King Lear. Outside, the world is being consumed by a virulent flu that will rapidly lay waste to most of humanity. Moonday Poetry celebrates its 12th year, and presents readings by:
William O’Daly is a poet, translator, essayist and fiction writer. With co-author Han-ping Chin, he recently completed a historical novel, This Earthly Life, based on the Chinese Cultural Revolution, which was selected for the “Finalist” category in prestigious Narrative magazine’s 2009 Fall Story Contest.
Cecilia Woloch is the recipient of a 2011 NEA fellowship and the author of six award-winning collections of poems, most recently Earth (2014). She also published a novel recently, and runs private workshops for writers in the US and Europe.
Mandy Kahn is a Los Angeles poet, author of the poetry collection Math, Heaven, Time and is co-author of the nonfiction book Collage Culture: Examining the 21st Century’s Identity Crisis.
