Alexandra Petri will present the book “A Field Guide to Awkward Silences.” Most twentysomethings spend a lot of time avoiding awkwardness. Not Alexandra Petri. Afraid of rejection? Alexandra Petri has auditioned for “America’s Next Top Model.” Afraid of looking like an idiot? Alexandra Petri lost “Jeopardy!” by answering “Who is that dude?” on national TV. Afraid of bad jokes? Alexandra Petri won an international pun championship. But Petri is here to tell you: Everything you fear is not so bad. Trust her. She’s tried it. And in the course of her misadventures, she’s learned that there are worse things out there than awkwardness–and that interesting things start to happen when you stop caring what people think.

But the bombing of Pearl Harbor strains the newly formed family as U.S. government mandates and Tom’s growing discomfort with all things Japanese force Mitsuko and young Bill to leave Seattle and Tom behind for the Minidoka Internment Camp, unsure if they will ever return. JAY RUBIN is a professor of Japanese literature at Harvard University, where he has employed the pedagogical techniques contained in Making Sense of Japanese “as infrequently as possible.”

Writer at Skylight Books
Jason Squire Fluck reads from his debut novel “Jon Fixx.” Jon Fixx is a clever, light-hearted thriller dressed up in the trappings of a misguided romance. The novelty of writing love stories as wedding gifts has worn thin for Jon as his own love life falls to pieces. But when Mafia Don Tony Vespucci comes knocking, Vespucci won’t take no for an answer. As Jon’s choices carry him deeper into the dark nexus of the FBI and La Cosa Nostra, Jon realizes what he writes could have life or death consequences. Born in CA and raised in PA, Jason Squire Fluck spent most of his childhood reading books. After college, he moved to Los Angeles to pursue a career in acting and writing.
