Come to hear the reading dynamo that is Richard and Robbi Nestor! Husband and wife poetry team are going to enchant us with their words on life’s lessons. You can bring some words of your own and share them in the open reading. Sign ups begin at 6:45. Richard Nester’s poetry has been published in numerous print journals including Ploughshares, Callaloo, Seneca Review, Sycamore Review and on-line in in The Courtland Review. His collection Buffalo Laughter (2014) Alabaster Leaves Press in Riverside. Robbi Nester lives and writes in Southern California. She is the author of a chapbook, Balance(White Violet, 2012) and a collection of poems, A Likely Story (Moon Tide, 2014).

Megan Kruse Discusses and Signs Call Me Home
“Call Me Home” has an epic scope in the tradition of Louise Erdrich’s The Plague of Doves or Marilynne Robinson’s Housekeeping and braids the stories of a family in three distinct voices: Amy, who leaves her Texas home at 19 to start a new life with a man she barely knows, and her two children, Jackson and Lydia, who are rocked by their parents’ abusive relationship. When Amy is forced to bargain for the safety of one child over the other, she must retrace the steps in the life she has chosen.

Emily Schultz reads from The Blondes, in conversation with Tamar Halpern
“The Blondes” is set during a still autumn in New York City, a rabies-like illness spreads among blonde women, causing them to “rage out” and attack passersby. The epidemic shuts down New York where Hazel, a grad student who is pregnant and alone, tries to escape only to find the disease infecting women throughout North America. Emily Schultz is the co-founder of Joyland Magazine, host of the podcast Truth & Fiction and lives in Brooklyn.

Red Hen Press Presents L.A. Spotlight Series at Boston Court
Reading from their work are: William Archila, Lory Bedikian, and Fady Joudah with Charif Shanahan. William Archila is the author of The Art of Exile (Bilingual Review Press, 2009), which won an International Latino Book Award in 2010. The Gravedigger’s Archaeology (forthcoming), recently won the 2015 Letras Latinas/Red Hen Poetry Prize. Lory Bedikian is the author of The Book of Lamenting, winner of the the 2010 Philip Levine Prize in Poetry. Fady Joudah‘s poetry collections and translations have earned him a Yale Series prize, a Guggenheim fellowship and a Griffin International prize among others. His latest translation is Petra: the Concealed Rose.

Story Pirates
The “Who Was…? Insanely Awesome Trivia Show” is a game show themed theatrical presentation centered around Who Was…?, the hit biography series for children featuring cultural icons from throughout history and today, from Leonardo da Vinci to Barack Obama. In this hilarious performance by the acclaimed education and media group, Story Pirates, students will face down against The Smartest Person in the World to see who knows the most about fascinating people of the past and present. CalArts Writers Showcase: Next Words
The School of Critical Studies hosts it annual reading showcasing the graduating class of CalArts MFA Creative Writing Program. “Next Words” is both a reading series and a publication featuring work by graduating MFA Creative Writing students. This year’s publication entitled “Ephemera” will also be on hand. Followed by a reception, the Showcase offers an opportunity to experience the exciting new writing coming out of CalArts and to raise a glass to a group of talented and dedicated young writers. Beyond Baroque Fiction Showcase
Workshop leader, Laurie Horowitz hosts writers from Beyond Baroque’s Monday Night Fiction Workshop reading from their works in progress. With Special Guest Elyce Wakerman. Elyce Wakerman will be discussing and reading from her novel, “A Tale of Two Citizens.” The story was inspired by her father’s experience as an illegal immigrant during the 1930s, which will give her the opportunity to talk about how real-life events can be turned into fiction, at the same time that the story itself demonstrates how similar the immigration issue remains to this day.

Wendy C. Ortiz’ HOLLYWOOD NOTEBOOK the Book Release Party
Please join Wendy C. Ortiz & Writ Large Press for the release of Hollywood Notebook. “Hollywood Notebook” is a prose poem-ish memoir of fragments. Ortiz takes us through the streets of Los Angeles and the internal maps she’s charting as she moves from her twenties to her thirties in a studio apartment in Hollywood. It is a portrait of the author’s psyche overlaid on a map of the city she makes her home. Wendy C. Ortiz’s work has appeared in The New York Times, McSweeney’s Internet Tendency and The Rumpus among others.
